Detectives hoping to crack the 30-year-old cold case murder of a female Fort Carson soldier have offered a $10,000 reward and released computer generated images of the killer based on new DNA technology.

Army specialist Darlene Krashoc was 20 years old when she was beaten, raped and strangled to death with a coat hanger and leather straps in Colorado Springs back in 1987.

She was found dumped in a car park behind a Korean restaurant and her autopsy indicated her body may have been thrown from a moving vehicle.

The U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Command have now released state-of-the-art phenotype images of the man suspected of killing Krashoc - almost 30 years to the day that she was murdered.

Investigators used a process called phenotyping to create the two images, which uses crime scene DNA samples to predict what a suspect could look like.

Authorities said that at the time of her death, Krashoc was an active duty solider stationed at Fort Carson assigned to the 73rd maintenance company.

She was five months shy of her 21st birthday.

The night before her body was discovered, Krashoc had gone to a local club with some member of her unit where she spent the evening drinking and dancing.

She was last seen leaving the club between midnight and 1am. Her body was discovered about 5.30am by officers from Colorado Springs Police Department.

'After a thorough crime scene examination, collection of evidence, and hundreds of interviews, the case went cold,' investigators said.

'In 2004 and 2011, the investigation was reopened for laboratory testing and an unknown DNA profile that genetically types as male was located on several pieces of evidence.'

The DNA found on the 27 pieces of evidence was used to create the phenotype image late last year.

Investigators believe the DNA belongs to a man who was about 25 at the time of the killing, which would make him between 50 and 55 years old now.

'It is important to note that the composites are scientific approximations of appearance based on DNA, and are not likely to be exact replicas of appearance,' investigators said.

They said environmental factors like drinking and smoking, as well as other factors including facial hair, scars and hairstyles, could not be predicted by the DNA analysis.

Anyone with information on the case is asked to contact the Army's Criminal Investigation Command at 1-844-Army-CID or 571-305-4375.
